The Software Services Group is a newly formed group (as of March 15, 2010) within the Advanced Photon Source Accelerator Engineering Support Division.

Software Services Group Mission

To provide flexible, customer-oriented software services to the accelerator and beamlines in support of world-class photon science at the APS. These services are rendered through the application of our core competencies: embedded software, software engineering, distributed control systems, information systems, high performance computing, scientific software, and graphical user interfaces. Our mission is to maintain cutting edge skills and technology in these competencies, apply them to meet or exceed the requirements of the accelerator and beamline projects at hand, and provide responsive, efficient support of established systems. Projects shall be conducted in a transparent, well-documented manner to enable the prioritization of our services.

What does all this mean to you?

We are open to discussion of your needs at any time. We will document your requirements and track them with the Jira issue tracking system. You will be able to view your requirements, comment on them, and observe progress when they become active projects. In addition to tracking these detailed requirements, we will maintain a number of wiki pages here that describe overall projects, technical direction, recommended software, recommended software design patterns, and other such information. You are also free to comment on the content here in the wiki pages.

How to contact us?

If this is in relation to a particular beamline sector:

  • Contact the designated BCDA support person first. They will carry the request to us, if appropriate, and make sure it is followed through.
  • If this request is forwarded to us to handle, we will track it and make sure the BCDA contact is kept in the loop.

Otherwise:

  • Please email Nicholas Schwarz, the Software Services Group leader at nschwarz@aps.anl.gov.
  • Or, you may also contact anyone from the group directly as well.
